Pink Ribbon

What does comfort mean?

Comfort is defined in many ways, according to Webster’s, 1).To soothe in time of affliction or distress. 2).To ease physically; relieve. 3). A condition or feeling of pleasurable ease, well-being, and contentment. 4). Solace in time of grief or fear. 5). Help; assistance: 6). One that brings or provides comfort.

All of the above defines who we want to be to someone else, someone else who is longing for help or longing for health. 10 years ago a community friend, Mrs. Bert Wood, approached High Point Regional with an idea…an idea to bring comfort to all women with a first diagnosis with cancer. Bert’s friend Alyson Barnard is a breast cancer survivor who created the Pink Ribbon Bag concept in 1995 after her journey with cancer. She felt it necessary to convey a message to all women stating their journey with cancer that they aren’t alone and together as a community and a healthcare family, we will support each other.

The Pink Ribbon Luncheon was started to bring hope, comfort and support to the people who are diagnosed everyday at High Point Regional Hayworth Cancer Center. This luncheon has grown to provide not only the Pink Ribbon Bags, it also provides the opportunity for staff and family education materials, and most recently, CancerFitt.

CancerFitt is a 12-week supervised, group exercise class designed specifically for cancer patients. Studies consistently demonstrate that:
• Exercise has beneficial effects on a wide variety of quality-of-life
outcomes regardless of the type of exercise, cancer site, cancer
treatment, or whether or not the person is currently undergoing
• Exercise for cancer survivors may decrease the risk of co-morbid
conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and stroke.
• There is a strong relationship between exercise and stress reduction.
• Moderate exercise can have a positive effect on the immune system.
• Exercise can improve body composition, increasing muscle mass and decreasing fat.
• Exercise may facilitate the ability to return to work.

Anthony Brandt quotes, “Other things may change us, but we start and end with family” In this case our family includes our friends and our neighbors who bring us comfort.
