High Point Regional Awarded Duke Grant to Help Victims of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault

8/30/2002

High Point Regional Health System has been awarded a Duke Endowment Grant in the amount of $153,000 to help victims of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.

The funds will be used to further educate nurses and other hospital staff about domestic violence, send more RN’s for Forensic Nurses’ Training, and send RN’s to workshops and seminars to further their education about domestic violence and sexual assault.

The program will also educate the community, victims, schools and law enforcement with the latest information about treatment, and assist victims with shelter and medications when necessary. Cost of special equipment and supplies needed for the Forensic Nurse program at the hospital, as well as salaries for social workers and nurses for these special cases, are also funded by the grant.
High Point Regional currently has six Forensic Nurse Examiners, and was the first program of it’s kind in Guilford County. According to Gerri Nordstrom, Clinical Coordinator of the program, “The Forensic Nurse Program at High Point Regional has grown and will continue to develop with the help of the Duke Endowment Grant.”
