Celebrating Innovation in End-of-Life Care

8/2/2005

High Point Regional Health System has been named a Circle of Life Award winner for its innovative program that improves the care of patients living with life threatening illnesses and those nearing the end of life.

The Circle of Life Award celebrates programs across the nation that have made great strides in palliative and end-of-life care. The awards are supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in Princeton, N.J. and are sponsored by the American Hospital Association, the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, the American Medical Association and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.

High Point Regional’s palliative care team includes physicians, nurses, chaplains, social workers, nutritionists, and physical therapists. The team sees patients throughout the hospital with the goal of helping them live well while facing difficult illnesses.

According to Martha Barham, Vice President, High Point Regional, “We are honored to be a recipient of the 2005 Circle of Life award. It acknowledges the willingness of the health system and staff to support patients and families during a most vulnerable time by involving them in defining their journey toward end-of-life.”

High Point Regional was chosen by a selection committee made up of leaders from medicine, nursing, social work, and health administration. The committee focused on innovative programs that respect patient goals and preferences, provide comprehensive care, acknowledge and address the family or caregivers’ concerns and needs, and build systems and mechanisms of support to continue the program for future patients and caregivers.
